Being an ally to marginalized groups is a great thing. Here's some tips on being a better ally. Note that I will edit this to add changes as needed. - Listen to members of marginalized groups. Their experiences and input is important and being a good ally includes knowing when to listen.
- Don't out people. This is so important. Be extremely careful and don't talk about others unless they tell you it's okay.
- You're going to screw up. That's okay. Learn to apologize and be understanding. You might accidentally hurt people, and people may respond with anger or sadness. Your initial reaction may be to respond with anger yourself. Don't do that.
- You're not going to understand everything about what it's like to be a member of a marginalized group that's not your own. That's okay, too.
